Two milling methods of gears: down milling and up milling and their characteristics

The two milling methods of gears: down milling and up milling, and the comparison of their characteristics are as follows, for reference.

1. Climbing milling method

In the milling process, when the rotation direction of the milling cutter is the same as the feed motion direction, it is called down milling.

2. Up-milling method

In the milling process, the rotation direction of the milling cutter is opposite to the feed direction of the milling cutter, which is called up-milling.

3. Comparison of some characteristics of down milling and up milling:

a. Climbing milling method mills the teeth, the chip thickness decreases from the thickness to the exit as the milling cutter cuts in, as shown in the figure below.

b. With the up-milling method, the chip thickness changes from thin to thick as the milling cutter cuts in to exit, as shown in the figure above.

c. When milling teeth by down milling, the vertical milling component force is pressed to the inside of the workpiece, and the cutting is stable, as shown in the figure below.

d. When the up-milling method mills the tooth, the vertical cutting component force goes out of the workpiece, which is easy to lift the workpiece, as shown in the figure above.

e. Down-milling method is suitable for the case where the rigidity of the process system is better, while the up-milling method has little effect on the rigidity of the process system.

Because of the down-milling method, because the cutting direction of the milling cutter is the same as the feed direction, the gap between the various links of the feed system is loosened during the milling process, which will cause the workpiece to move during processing.
